Potty Talk

Lighted Toilet Seat by Kohler | Frisco, TX Electrician | Licensed Master Electrician | Nisat Electric

Electrician Potty Talk???
Potty Talk seems more applicable for a plumber’s blog, doesn’t it? In this case, because it involves lighting we’re going to give you the electrician’s perspective. Yes, there is special lighting for the potty and, much to our surprise, there are several options available!  Also, Potty Talk would not be complete without information about how to poop because according to research conducted online, a lot of people are pooping wrong so be sure to check out the video at the end!

Bathroom Business
Waking up in the middle of the night to take care of business in the bathroom is a fact of life for most of us even though we may not discuss it frequently. While you have the choice to turn lights on along the way, most choose instead to make their way in the dark because sudden bright illumination when you’re half asleep is just too unpleasant an awakening!

Statistically speaking, if one or more of these has not already happened to you in the course of taking care of bathroom business, it will occur during the remainder of your lifetime so beware of:

  • Momentary blindness from turning on lights
  • Waking your partner
  • Running into furniture, walls or door frames
  • Tripping and falling
  • Missing the target (males)
  • Falling into the target (females)

We don’t actually have scientific data to support our statistics; we just think “statistically speaking” sounds more authoritative, don’t you agree?

You could simply turn the lights on with your eyes closed and wait a few moments to adjust before opening your eyes. This will eliminate running into objects, tripping & falling and, hopefully, missing the target. Ladies could give up males altogether which would eliminate the target issues as well as the risk of falling into the target since there would be no need for the seat to ever be raised and thus left in the raised position. But in reality, none of these measures is very likely to happen by choice.

Once you’ve safely made your way to the bathroom, there are several products on the market that enable you to take care of business without turning on the bathroom lights. All of the products we’ve discovered involve lighting the toilet bowl via illumination incorporated into the toilet seat or products used in conjunction with preexisting toilet seats.

Lighted Toilet Seats by Kohler
Kohler offers a line of Nightlight toilet seats with technology to help guide you safely and comfortably. Featuring two LED bulbs that illuminate your toilet in a soft glow, Kohler suggests it is perfect for children, senior citizens or anyone who needs to use the bathroom in the middle of the night.

The dual LED lighting is designed to automatically provide optimal light intensity for guidance without disturbing nighttime vision. The light is located in the toilet seat hinge so it is visible even when the lid is down (this could be extremely helpful to prevent females from being caught by surprise when a male actually does put the seat AND the lid down on rare occasions!).

Prices range from $38 up to $1,900(!) for models with bidet capabilities. The Kohler Nightlight operates on AA batteries for up to six months. It turns on automatically on a seven-hour cycle, eliminating the need to turn it on at night and off in the morning.

LumaWarm Heated Nightlight Toilet Seat
With a regular price of $225, the LumaWarm heated nightlight seat available via Brondell is not for the budget-conscious. However, people living in the cold northern half of the United States will be very interested in this option. LumaWarm is powered by a standard GFCI wall outlet which very likely will require installation by a licensed electrician (yes, Nisat Electric installs GFCI outlets!).

For those who dread sitting on cold toilet seats, LumaWarm has three adjustable temperature settings. It is illuminated by long-lasting, energy-efficient blue LED lights and fits all standard toilet fixtures. It has a one year limited warranty.

IllumiBowl Turns Your Toilet Into Color-Changing Party Light
According to this article on CNET, if you install the colorful IllumiBowl light it will look like someone’s hosting a party in your toilet!  IllumiBowl is currently in development with a Kickstarter campaign underway to raise $20,000 capital for final tooling and production. The campaign is scheduled to end November 26, 2014.

LIGHTING Toilet Bowl Illumination 05 IllumiBowl

IllumiBowl is a small control box that you stick on the outside of your toilet bowl near the seat. The sensor turns the light on and off automatically when it detects motion. No need to get bored using the potty with the assistance of IllumiBowl! The product demonstration video shows the color changing every few seconds. You can pre-order IllumiBowl for $10 in either blue, green or red via the company website.

Even though you’re not likely to call a licensed master electrician to assist with your toilet lighting needs, we are intrigued by the concept and wanted to share this information with you. If you have experience using these or similar products, please comment below and let us know what you think!

Electrical Powered Games & Toys

Electrical Games & Toys | Frisco, TX | Licensed Master Electrician | Nisat Electric

Production of electrical powered toys and games has increased tremendously over the years. Early inventions required connection to a wired electrical system, which meant the products were generally not portable. Even so, many of the early toys and games powered by electricity are still popular today, either in vintage form which is often sought by collectors, or more modern versions.  The increased electrical load demanded by the plethora of electric devices in the average home requires extra measures be taken to guard against electrical shock and fire.

Electrical Outlets & Safety For Games & Toys

Proud to have several pinball machines and video games in your game room or man cave? Have the biggest, baddest model train layout in all of North Texas?  You should consider having AFCI and GFCI protection installed to ensure the maximum protection possible for your playmates and your sensitive electronics.  Simply put, AFCIs prevent fires and GFCIs prevent electrical shocks. Both should be installed by a licensed electrician to make your home safer.

Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCIs) help prevent electric fires. Electricity can “leak” from damaged or decaying wires and start a fire. These fires spread quickly in the wiring behind walls, cause more damage than other types of fire and, most important, they are twice as deadly as other types of fire. AFCI protection uses sensors to detect an electricity leak; immediately upon sensing an electricity leak, AFCIs automatically shut down electrical current. Stopping the electrical current before overheating occurs is key to preventing electrical fires.

Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) help prevent burns, electric shocks and electrocution. A GFCI has sensors that measure the current going out and the current coming back in. Normally, the current is balanced in both directions; if the current is out of balance, something is not working properly. This creates a personal safety hazard. The GFCI senses this, and immediately shuts down the circuit, stopping the flow of electricity. Because water is a highly dangerous electric conductor, GFCIs are extremely important in areas where both water and electricity are present such as bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms and garages.

Call Nisat Electric at (214) 536-5555 to install additional electrical outlets for your electrical toys!  We can even install dedicated circuits and whole house surge protection to ensure the maximum protection possible for your sensitive electronics.  In the meantime, we hope you are inspired by the following information about the earliest electrical powered toys & games!

Early Electricity Powered Toys & Games

Toy Trains

The first electric train set was produced in 1897 by the American company Carlisle & Finch. By 1901, Lionel made its first electric train for use in store display windows. Because the average home did not have electricity to power model trains, the earliest electrical train sets were only found in the wealthiest homes. As more homes became “electrified” and prices for the electric toy trains dropped, the toys gained in popularity and beginning in the 1920s they were mass-produced for the general public. Initially developed with young boys in mind, train sets have become very popular among adults spawning an entire industry that supports the collection and operation of toy trains. Modern toy trains incorporate digital technology both on board and at the control panels.

Pinball Machines

MONTAGE Electrical Powered Pinball Machines 01The earliest version of the modern pinball machine evolved from the table game bagatelle. Coin operated versions known as “marble games” or “pin games” were introduced in the 1930s. The table was under glass and incorporated a spring-loaded plunger device to propel the ball into the play field. In 1932, the game Ballyhoo was invented; it featured a large playing field and ten pockets. Immensely popular, the name was later changed to Bally. Around the same time, Pacific Amusements in California produced Contact which had an electrically powered solenoid to propel the ball out of a bonus hole in the middle of the play field; another solenoid rang a bell to reward the player. Bells, music and electric lights designed to attract players soon became a standard feature of all subsequent pinball games. Popular among both males and females, pinball machines were the undisputed electronic game of choice for older kids throughout the 50s, 60s and 70s.

Electronic Football

MONTAGE Electrical Powered Table Football 01The first electric football game was produced by Tudor Metal Products in 1947. Tudor used a vibrating model for their electric race car game as the technological basis for Electric Football. When the motor beneath the playing field was activated, the metallic field vibrated causing players on the field to spring into motion.Licensing rights with the National Football League in the 1960s brought about the use of team logos and replication of real life stadiums. Rising popularity of the game led to frequent improvements over the years including greater control of player movement and digital scoreboards. However, as with nearly all early electrical games, electronic football has lost in popularity to the increasingly more convenient and technologically advanced video game.

Lite-Brite

ELECTRICAL GAME Lite Brite 01Invented by Burt Meyer and created by Hasbro in 1967, Lite-Brite allows the user to create illuminated designs using small colored plastic pegs by pushing the pegs through opaque black paper lit from behind. When illuminated, the pegs appear similar to LEDs. Children can create a design using color-by-letter templates or create their own designs. Modern versions of Lite-Brite include a flat-screen version, a 3D cube and a FX edition that spins and plays music. Prices range from $10 to $40.

Feeling a nostalgic desire to play with your old Lite-Brite but don’t have it anymore?

Easy-Bake Oven

ELECTRICAL GAME Easy Bake Oven 02Generations of American women baked their first cake at a very young age using a cherished Easy-Bake Oven. Introduced by Kenner in 1963 and currently manufactured by Hasbro, the original toy used an ordinary incandescent light bulb as a heat source to cook. Modern versions of this toy, the use of which is considered a rite of passage by many, use a true heating element. The oven comes with packets of cake mix and small round pans. Still highly popular today because it is generally considered a safe and fun product to introduce children to cooking, there is an entire website devoted to Easy-Bake Oven recipes of all kinds!

Operation Board Game

ELECTRICAL GAME Operation 01John Spinello, inventor of one of the first battery-powered pop culture board games, Operation, is raising funds for his own real life surgery. Operation debuted in 1965 and by the early 70s was a hit among youngsters “shocked” by the lighted nose and buzzer sound. Although the game is still produced by Hasbro and sold by many retailers, Spinello does not receive any royalties; he sold the rights for $500 shortly after inventing the game when he was an industrial design student.

Testing players’ hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills, Operation consists of an operating table featuring a comical image of the patient, “Cavity Sam.” The surface has a number of openings (cavities) filled with fictional and humorously named plastic ailments. Using a pair of tweezers, players must remove the ailment from the cavity without touching the tweezers to the metal edge of the cavity opening. When a player fails to safely remove an ailment, Cavity Sam’s red lightbulb nose lights up and a harsh buzzer sound is played.

If you’re wishing you had thought of a better Halloween costume this past weekend, consider dressing up as Cavity Sam next year! Some of the best Operation-themed Halloween costumes are featured at Coolest Homemade Costumes.

Battery Powered Toys

Although it had a relatively low battery life, zinc-carbon batteries were the primary battery of choice until the late 1950s. In the mid-50s, the National Carbon Company Parma Research Laboratory focused development on economically feasible alkaline batteries, thus the birth of the common alkaline battery in 1959. Quickly gaining use worldwide, the batteries spawned the battery operated toy industry. Early inventions were mainly battery-powered vehicles of all different types, interactive activity centers which featured lights and noises and, for some unfathomable reason, monkeys and bears that played drums, banged cymbals or engaged in other strange activities. There’s even a battery operated bartender (video) that we hope was for adult entertainment only.  Collectors can share their finds at Collectors Weekly.

If you don’t have young children or pets, that is; no matter how many times you explain Daylight Saving Time to them, they just don’t understand! We don’t have any tips for this problem; if you’ve found a solution, please comment below!

Five SIX Tips to ‘Fall Back’ From Daylight Saving Time

Experts suggest everyone should take steps to minimize the adjustment period. According to this ABC News article, Dr. Yosef Krespi, director of the New York Head and Neck Institute’s Center for Sleep Disorders, says “It will hit you Sunday evening, but if your body clock is tuned to waking up with sunlight, you’re going to benefit.”

1. Wake Up at a Normal Time Sunday Morning
2. Change Your Smoke Detector Batteries
3. Eat Well and Exercise
4. Get a Good Night’s Sleep Sunday Night
5. Try a Low Dose of Melatonin
6. Know That Your Body Will Adjust

Have you ever considered that ending Daylight Saving Time in favor of having daylight begin an hour earlier is dangerous? If so, you’re not alone. According to this article in Time, keeping the hour of sunlight in the evening rather than earlier in the day could prevent traffic deaths and save more than 170 lives annually.

BOO! Energy Vampires & Phantom Loads

Energy Vampires & Phantom Loads | Frisco, TX Electrician | Licensed Master Electrician | Nisat Electric

BOO! Energy Vampires & Phantom Loads
Halloween is the time of year to remind you that Energy Vampires and Phantom Loads lurk throughout your home and business year round! You can save money and conserve energy by taking measures to reduce these areas that suck valuable resources.

What Are They?
Energy vampires are appliances or other devices that draw energy, aka phantom loads, when they are plugged in but not in use. This includes electronics that require standby power to run such as clocks, coffeemakers and cable/satellite units. Alone, each device doesn’t cost that much but consider the cumulative effect of several devices drawing phantom loads over the course of a year. This can add up to significant cash vanishing from your bank account!

Unplug!
While it’s not realistic to unplug devices that feature clocks and timers due to the necessity of resetting lost data as a result of power loss, you can easily unplug laptop, tablet, cell phone, camera and power tool chargers when not in direct use.

Use Advanced Power Strips
An Advanced Power Strip manages vampire load for you so that when you turn off devices such as your TV, your entire home theater system including DVD player and game console, turn off as well. Use an Advanced Power Strip for any cluster of electronics you want to control with the flip of a single switch or the click of a remote control.

Choose ENERGY STAR® Products and Save!
ENERGY STAR® qualified electronics offer the same features and technology as non-qualified products, but they use less energy.

Green Computing
Another step you can take is to activate the power management feature available via your computer’s operating system. This will allow you to reduce energy usage and costs by putting the computer into a low-power “sleep” mode when you aren’t using it. A simple touch of the mouse or keyboard will “wake” the computer up in seconds.

You can also set your system to “hibernate” which puts your open documents and programs on your hard disk and then turns off the computer. Hibernation uses less power than sleep (and protects unsaved files from any power interruptions), but takes longer to wake up.

Enabling power management features on your computer could save you anywhere from 100 to 600 kWh per year depending on your computer usage. These savings are equivalent to anywhere from $9 to $54 per year at 9 cents per kWh.

Easy, step-by-step instructions to activate power management on your computers are available via Energy Star here.

Realistic Savings
According to the ENERGY STAR® program, the average U.S. household spends $100 per year to power devices in standby mode and chargers that are not in direct use. For those that think this insignificant in terms of your bank account, consider this: on a national basis, standby power accounts for more than 100 billion kilowatt hours of annual U.S. electricity consumption and more than $10 billion in annual energy costs.

101 Uses for Electrical Tape

Part of ensuring our customer’s satisfaction is to carefully clean up after every project so there is no dust left behind and any furniture or other objects that were moved are put back into place. There is, however, one item that is often overlooked: electrical tape! Most likely because it can very easily roll underneath furniture without notice, electrical tape can be left behind.

In case you’re wondering what to do with that electrical tape the electrician left behind once your cat tires of using it as a hockey puck, we wanted to give you a few ideas. Although it is not as versatile as duct tape, it has many applications that are not electrical related. We couldn’t actually think of 101 alternative uses but that makes for a better blog post title, don’t you agree?

About Electrical Tape
First invented by 3M, electrical tape is a pressure-sensitive tape used to insulate electrical wires and other materials that conduct electricity. It is composed of either plastics, vinyl or fiberglass cloth. Vinyl is the most popular composition as it stretches well and provides long lasting protection.

Available in a wide variety of colors, black is typically used most by electricians. Other colors are generally used to indicate a special purpose: red, blue and white are used in low voltage applications for sheathing. Brown, orange, yellow and gray are used with high voltage, green indicates Earth grounding and green with yellow stripes is used in cases of isolated grounding.

Because electrical tape is generally easily torn by hand, can be written on and typically pulls away from surfaces cleanly it is often used for non-electrical applications such as labeling and for creative craft projects.

Alternative Uses for Electrical Tape
Due to its flexibility, ability to remove cleanly and the variety of colors available there are several non-electrical uses for electrical tape.

  • Theater Productions: Securing stage lighting cables & marketing positions on the stage during rehearsals.
  • Sports: Soccer and football players use it to keep their shin guards from sipping. Rugby teams have been known to tape their ears back to prevent cuts and abrasions.
  • Musicians: Drummers in marching bands use colored tape to wrap their drum sticks; this not only makes the sticks more durable, but also draws attention to them when playing. Many musicians also wrap their fingers before a long session or performance to help prevent blisters.
  • Organization: Electrical tape is great for color coding and, because you can write on it, labeling purposes.
  • Rubik’s Cube®: Perfectly replacing the original stickers when they begin to peel.
  • General Repairs: Electrical tape has been used to repair anything and everything including bicycles, computer components, etc.

Craft Projects
Highly creative people who think outside the box have discovered many crafty uses for electrical tape. Some leave us scratching our head wondering, “Why?” Among the ideas we found in a brief online search:

General Craft Projects

Creating Wall Art with Electrical Tape (Beginners)

  • Wall Mural: If you’re REALLY ambitious you could try something like this wall mural shown in a time-lapse video. Wonder how long this took to create?

Wacky Uses for Electrical Tape
We actually don’t recommend electrical tape for this type of application. This should be considered a good example of what not to do with electrical tape.
